There are over 129,000 Black-owned businesses in New York (Source: US Census Bureau [PDF] ), and these businesses need the support of the community to thrive economically.
There are also many people who want to support Black-owned businesses in their community, but this task can be difficult without a comprehensive local business directory.
Black Owned NY was created to increase the visibility of local Black businesses in New York, including the 5 boroughs, Long Island, and upstate New York, and to allow for local economic collaboration and support.

DEFINITION OF A BLACK-OWNED BUSINESS
According to MWBE.com (the Minority and Women Owned Enterprises website), a Black-owned business is defined as a business that is least 51% Black-owned or, in the case of a publicly-owned business, at least 51% of the stock is Black-owned.
Further, the management and daily operations are controlled by Black people.
BlackOwnedNewYork.com conforms to the same standard as MWBE.com with the additional requirement that the business have at least one location in New York.
ABOUT THE DEVELOPER
 Black Owned NY was conceptualized and developed by Veronique Topping Knight, owner of I-NetUniq Technologies, a web development company that works EXCLUSIVELY WITH WEB DESIGNERS to provide customized internet solutions for small business owners.
After spending over 15 years working in IT for other companies, Mrs. Knight decided to put her business and technology experience to better use by developing her own web development company.
She then developed BlackOwnedNewYork.com as her way of giving back to her community as well as exposing local Black business owners to a worldwide audience through the use of the internet.
